The Folger Shakespeare Library is a unique historic site located one block from the U.S. Capitol building. While the exterior of this beautiful Art Deco structure is white marble, the interior features Tudor-style rooms with stained-glass windows, oak paneling, and hammerbeam construction. Opened in 1932, a gift to the American people from Henry Clay Folger and his wife, Emily Jordan Folger, the Library houses the largest collection of Shakespeare materials in the world and one of the finest collections of fifteenth- through eighteenth-century books, manuscripts, paintings, and other artifacts from Great Britain and the Continent. Spaces available for events include the Old Reading Room, modeled on the royal and collegial halls of the Elizabethan period, and the Great Hall, with a thirty-foot strapwork ceiling, exquisitely tiled floor, and hand-carved heraldic devices. The Founders Room and the Board Room provide a more intimate setting for smaller groups.
